Not Into DC Statehood? New Research Indicates Becoming a Sovereign Nation May Be Easier
The District of Columbia has been under federal control since its creation in 1801. Over the past century, DC statehood has become a polarizing issue. In fact, everyone in the country other than the residents of the DIstrict have had a say in the matter. The best efforts of top experts in the nation to achieve true representation for all it’s citizens have failed. A better path for the residents of DC may have been discovered.
THe brilliant researchers of Christopher Newport University have discovered a path that could be less polarizing and has a higher probability of success. Instead of another attempt at statehood, the District of Columbia could become a completely sovereign nation. Secession from the United States would cure many issues, including the issue of Federal control. As Dr. Brighton Doubleton - Political Scientist describes, “It pretty much solves every portable. DC would still be under federal control. Just a different federal control.”
In a successful, yet ironic move to become its own country, DC would still not be granted. An official statement from the GOP states, “We would go to war with the Republic of the District of Columbia before we let that country give itself statehood.”
